A brief introduction to College of Foreign Languages

Majors of Foreign Languages（English language, enrollment as one major for both students of liberal arts and sciences, four-year program）

There are three majors for the program of foreign Languages: English, Translation and interpreting, and Business English. Students will be trained to have good listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation skills and improve their multi-lingual and cross-cultural competences. With special attention to transport expertise and Maritime English, students may have solid language skills, keen international vision and unique expertise.

In the first year, students may have the same curriculum and they shall choose and determine their majors from the second year according to their GPA.

Curriculum in the first academic year: Comprehensive English, English listening, English reading, Spoken English, English pronunciation, Brief introduction to English speaking countries, etc.

English

The major aims for advanced English talents with good English, and international trade and international shipping expertise. Over the past years, the pass rate of Tests for English Majors Grade 4 and 8 (TEM 4 and TEM 8) are respectively 98 and 93.88%.

Main courses: Advanced English, translation, English listening and speaking, English grammar, Interpreting, Introduction to linguistics, English newspaper reading, Literature history and readings in English and American literature, comparative studies between English and Chinese, Academic writing, English lexicology, Maritime law English and its translation, English for international shipping, Introduction to e-commerce, English for international marketing, English, advance business English, Introduction to marine culture, business English interpreting, English for international finance, English for international logistics, a second foreign language etc.

Employment: enterprises, institutions and positions relative to international affairs, trades, or foreign capital, especially in logistics and shipping; cross cultural practices, teaching and management in cultural and educational fields.

Translation and interpreting

The new major is designed to meet high demands for translation and interpreting talents. Students are trained to have good bilingual skills, Chinese and western cultures, outstanding cross cultural and communication competence, good knowledge of humanities, maritime affairs, as well as skills and theories for translation and interpreting.

Main courses: Advanced English, English listening, English writing, English essay writing, History of translation, Appreciation of Chinese classical literatures, Comparative studies between Chinese and Western cultures, Comparative studies between English and Chinese, Chinese to English Translation, English to Chinese translation, Business English and translation, Maritime English and translation, Interpretation theory and practice, Simultaneous translation, Appreciation of literary translation, Culture and translation, Translation criticism, Film translation, Introduction to Linguistics, Stylistics, a second foreign language etc.

Employment: professional translators or interpreters, general translators or interpreters and management in institutions and positions relative to international affairs, trades, or foreign capital, especially in logistics and shipping, or in cultural and educational fields.

Business English

Business English majors shall be practical business English professionals with sound English basis, broad international vision, international business knowledge and skills; basic knowledge in applied linguistics and applied economics, business administration and international business law and other related disciplines; international business rules, excellent cross-cultural business communication capabilities and good knowledge of humanities, so as to take part in international business competition and cooperation.

Main courses: English listening and speaking, English grammar, Business English translation and interpreting, Advanced English, Introduction to linguistics, Comparative studies between English and Chinese, readings in English and American literature, Advanced business English writing, Introduction to international business, Management theories, Maritime law, International shipping business, International trade practice and regulations, Cross-cultural business communication, Maritime English and translation, English for Maritime law, English for international shipping, English for international logistics, English for international trade, English for international marketing, English for international finances, Business Chinese, a second foreign language etc.

Employment: institutions and positions relative to international affairs, international shipping and business translation and interpreting.

 Also, the college has cooperation with University of Portsmouth (3+1, double-diploma program), and Kent State University(3+2, bachelor of SMU – master of Kent program).

Majors of Foreign Languages（Japanese language, for both students of liberal arts and sciences, four-year program）

The major aims for comprehensive and practical Japanese talents for the new century, with good Japanese language basis, international trade and international shipping expertise, knowledge of humanities, and cross cultural capabilities.

Main courses: Basic Japanese, Advanced Japanese, spoken Japanese, Japanese listening and speaking, Japanese grammar (modern and classical), Japanese writing, Japanese culture, Maritime Japanese, Business Japanese, Japanese newspaper reading, Japanese literature reading, Japanese-Chinese translation theory and practice and so on.

Employment: further study as a postgraduate; enterprises, institutions and positions relative to international affairs, trades, or foreign capita; translation, cross cultural affairs and management in cultural and educational fields.

 Also, the college has cooperation with Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies (2+2 double-diploma program, 3+1 program or six-month program).
