A Brief Introduction of SMUSecond-level-discipline Doctoral Program --Maritime Language Application
Filedby Ministry of Education in Nov. 2013, CFL of Shanghai Maritime University setup a doctoral program,called Maritime Language and Application, which is asecond-level discipline under the first level discipline of TransportEngineering. The establishment of the doctoral program conforms to therequirement to build China into a powerful country in terms of maritime andbuild Shanghai into an international shipping center, in the mean time, itshows the foresight of SMU in discipline construction.
Thedoctoral program takes the soft environment of maritime transportation as thescope of research, and mainly researches maritime language and its applicationin maritime transportation, involving language theories and applications ininternational maritime-affairs, international shipping, international maritimelaw, and cross cultural maritime exchanges. The discipline has threeorientations of research: maritime-document text analysis and translationprinciples, maritime language, and maritime culture and communicationstrategies.
Thediscipline employs a supervisory committee. The professors and teachers arewell versed in maritime policy and legislation, seafaring education andmanagement, ship operation safety and management, the study of maritimelanguage and translation, English-Chinese contrastive and translation studies,etc. They have undertaken many research subjects from the State, the Ministry ofTransport, the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality, published alarge number of high-quality academic research results, and won a number ofministerial and municipal awards, thus exerting a significant scholarly impactat home and abroad.
Thisdiscipline is scheduled to enroll PhD students in 2015, aiming at traininginternational high-end talents who not only have a good command of maritimelanguage and its application, but also are qualified in the coordinated work ininternational maritime organization. These talents are also expected toparticipate in translating internationalmaritime documents as well as in the platform of international speech andexchanges in the field of maritime.
