Mao Liqun

Mao, Liqun, professor of CFL inShanghai Maritime University, once studied in Swiss, Holland, Britain and HongKong etc. He used to be a member of Seamanship Teaching Advisory Board underthe Ministry of Education and Dean of Foreign College in Shanghai MaritimeUniversity. Now, he is a member of ELT Advisory Board under the Ministry ofEducation, and owns a membership of International Association of AppliedLinguistics. He is also a supervisor of International Association forEco-Translatology Research, a member of IATEL, a executive member of ShanghaiScience and Technology Translation Society and contributing editor of ShanghaiForeign Language Education Press. Up to now, he has published over 20 papers inacademic journals home and abroad and is author, translator of over 30monographs, dictionaries and textbooks, including 6 11th 5-year nationalplanned textbooks. He has been responsible for and/or participated in 13research projects sponsored national, provincial and Shanghai municipaleducation commission with 10 been completed and 4 research projects supportedby various enterprises. Meanwhile, he is responsible for one key course, oneexcellent course and one teaching reform project in university. He is also thedirector of establishment of the 4th of education highland buildup forundergraduate students in Shanghai.

Professor Mao Liqun held the postof dean of Foreign College for eight years from 2005 to 2013, during which hedevoted all his time and energy to work and always deemed the duty of dean apriority. Under the joint effort of every faculty member, great changes takenplace in foreign college.

Appointment taken, Duty taken

In 2005, Mr. Mao took theappointment and got the notice of teaching quality evaluation for Englishmajored undergraduates under the ministry of education. And in October 2006,panel from the ministry came to school and started their work. Trough theone-year preparation of Mr. Mao and his colleagues as well as concerted effortof other departments of the university, the evaluation went out smoothly andended up excellently. Among 45 undergraduate majors of the university, Englishmajor is the only major that has accepted the national evaluation and got theresult as Excellency.

At the same time, the collegeco-started TCSL education center with international education college to runschool internationally. As an honor, the college organized the 1st EnglishLanguage Teaching Seminar for the national maritime universities and colleges.In 2007, the college moved to the new campus in Lingang area and carried outsecondary-college reform to run school more substantially. It was the same yearthat the program Discipline and professional building and development programin 2007-2012 has been confirmed and 8 disciplinary building programs has beenlaunched and boosted. The college set up History Room of the College, wherescientific and teaching achievements will be exhibited, putting an end to theloss of historical evidences of centennial university or college due toadjustment of deployment from Shanghai Education Commission.

Great Achievements During Tenure

During his presidency of theCollege of Foreign Languages, especially in the past 5 years, Professor Mao, asdean of College of Foreign Languages, has brought glorious achievements to itin terms of faculty team building, discipline development, internationalcommunication as well as teaching & research.

President Mao laid great emphasison cultivation of talents and team building, which has kept a balancedproportion of old and young professors. During the time, College of ForeignLanguages has brought in 5 professors and developed 3, resulting in a total of12 professors, all of which were born between 1950s and 1970s, in the wholecollege. The college has now 28 teachers with doctoral degrees, compared toonly one in the first half year of 2005, 12 teachers who are presently on-jobdoctorates. In the recent 5 years, 70 percent of teachers in the college havegone abroad for further studies. All of these have built up a solid base ofreserved talents and College of Foreign Languages won the Award of TalentIntroduction & Development of Shanghai Maritime University for the firsttime.

In the recent 5 years, disciplinedevelopment in College of Foreign Languages has reached a level as well. TwoMaster’s degree programs, namely Master of English Language & Literatureand Master of Translation & Interpretation, have become part of thecollege, first session of students of which graduated in 2009 and 2013respectively. In 2011, after approved by Ministry of Education, the college hasbeen granted to confer master’s degree to Master of English Language &Literature as a primary discipline. The program of Master of Japanese Language& Literature first started enrolling students in 2012. All these newprograms have expanded the boundaries of disciplines of the college and builtnew platforms for further development. The college has also added BusinessEnglish as its other new undergraduate major.

In the recent 5 years, greatsuccess in teaching and research has also been achieved. In terms ofpublication, a total of more than 270 high-level papers have been published,together with 65 academic monographs; in the aspect of programs, 6 state-levelsocial science programs have been approved, as well as 14 Humanities and SocialSciences programs under Ministry of Education and Philosophy and Social Scienceprograms under Shanghai Municipality; one program has been honored “HighlandConstruction for Undergraduates”. Meanwhile, 9 national planning teachingmaterials have come off the press, one of which has been awarded the 2nd prizeof “Excellent Teaching Material of Shanghai”. Most of the approved programs andawards fill the blankness in the history of College of Foreign Languages.

In the recent 5 years, College ofForeign Languages has conducted international education practices and academiccommunications in diversified forms. The college has maintained a closerelationship in cooperation with universities and institutes from U.K., U.S.A.,Australia, Japan, etc. It has sent teachers and students to go abroad forexchange programs and also recruited foreign students to study for bachelor’sand master’s degrees. There are foreign students who, after 4 years of study,graduated from College of Foreign Languages this year for the first time. Thecollege has also been holding international and national academic forums for 4times; it has also undertaken International Culture Festival for 3 successiveyears. All these efforts have had a positive influence upon the academicatmosphere, explored new ideas of teaching methods and enhanced the reputationof College of Foreign Languages.
