Wu Jianguo

Professor Wu Jianguo, graduate tutor of CFL in SMU, receivedBusiness Management training in Pepperdine University. He has workingexperience in Spain, Denmark, Japan and other countries. Recent years, he hasbeen invited as a visiting professor to lecture on Intercultural BusinessCommunication, International Marketing Management etc. by many world famousuniversities like Columbia Luosangdisi University, American University inMexico,Medellin University of Science and Technology, Lima University and FudanUniversity, to name just a few.

 

First Man Giving Lectures Overseas

July 4th, 2013, Prof. Wu Jianguo, at the warm invitation of LimaUniversity, attended its opening ceremony of the 17th International AcademicMonth and series lectures for postgraduate students in Lima, the capital cityof Peru. Among over 50 world-renowned professors, he was the only Asian scholarfrom China. To show their affection for China and respect for Prof. Wu, LimaUniversity

 raised Chinese national flagat the 50th anniversary of International Business College and the commencementof International Academic Month which impressed guests from all over thecountry, especially overseas Chinese.

 

Prof. Wu lectured on Intercultural Business Communication and thosestudents were mainly managers and entrepreneurs from European or Americangovernments, business and institutions. Those 36 students  were divided into two classes. His excellentcase teaching method featuring flexible teaching, lucid explanation, skillfulEnglish, great knowledge and personal charm left a profound and wonderfulimpact on college faculty and students as well as overseas scholars.

 

Actually, this was not the first time for Prof. Wu to give a lecturein foreign countries. In July, 2006, it was at the invitation of ColumbiaLuosangdisi University that Prof. Wu gave his first lecture about InternationalMarketing. During that period, Medellin University of Science and Technologyalso invited him to host two seminars in addition to lectures for college facultyand students including business personage in Medellin.   

 

The second time was in July, 2007, by American University in Mexico.The lecture was about Cross-culture Business Communication, Regional Economyand International Marketing Management. At the same time, he was invited by MexicoEntrepreneurs Association to give three seminars. and help the new governor ofthe state of Puebla prepare administration material for the campaign before herappointment.

 

Professor Wu was the first man in our university to lecture inforeign countries. When he applied for visa in Beijing, ambassadors of Mexicoand Peru warmly received him and mentioned they had never received anapplication from a Chinese Professor who was invited to lecture in theircountry.

 

Popular Both at Home and Abroad

Speaking of why Prof. Wu could be invited by world-renowneduniversity, there was an anecdote. When Prof. Wu was lecturing in Fudan University,there were two professors from American University in Mexico who was sitting amongthe audience, hoping to officially invite

Prof. Wu to give lectures in their university. Later, manyuniversities come to Prof. Wu because they admired his fame.

The wonderful performance in teaching comes from his daily study andpractice. At school, Prof. Wu never fails to attract teachers and students byhis teaching skills and profound knowledge. His public optional course arepopular all the time with students and auditors packing the classroom.Undergraduate and graduate students highly recognize Prof. Wu and his teachingmethod.

 

Love Learning and Teaching

Prof. Wu has worked as consultant and manager for establishedcorporations in Spain, Denmark and Japan. It was a desirable occupation to workfor those corporations, however, Prof. Wu determined to return and became anordinary teacher of our university. He said he liked the academic atmosphere ofuniversity and love teaching. He hoped that he can share what he saw, what heheard and what he felt to the younger generation of own country.

Professor Wu excels both in teaching and academic research. He haspublished over 30 thesis in journals like Chinese Translation, World Literature(Hongkong), Shanghai Journalof Translation, Yilin, Foreign Languages Research, English and American LiteraryStudies and Book Town.

Also, he has written four books named The Study of Fitzgerald, AnIntroduction to International Trade ( Project of Ministry of Finance) and soon. His ten translation works includes Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, For Whomthe Bell Tolls, A Movable Feast, Islands in the Stream and Lack of Passion,Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise, Ira Levin’s The Perfect Day and Zane Grey’sRiders of the Purple Sage.

Besides, he is the chief editor of nine teaching materials includingIntensive Reading to Advanced English and Graduate English Series(5 volumes)etc.. And he also took charge of two projects in state, provincial andmunicipal level and three horizontal scientific research projects.

 

Teaching Through Practicing, Caring about Students

 

Prof. Wu not only performances like an artist on the rostrum butalso concern very much about students life. He actively expands resources tocreate more opportunities of internship and practice for students. Each year hetakes students to attend social practice.

For instance, in the Establishment of Shanghai Huamu InternationalSecurity Community, Prof. Wu took a group of English major students along withanother group of students from other university organized the Cross-boundaryInternational Security Community. He led the team receiving foreign guests,interpreting on site and translating many documents and image data for WHO,governments and even Shanghai World Expo. To ensure the quality, he coordinatedwith government on his own and watching on the site to guide and assiststudents, correcting their mistakes in the work. Their outstanding performanceleft a good impression to government and the team led by Prof. Wu has sincemaintained a long cooperative relations with Huamu Street until now.

This is Professor Wu Jianguo who wins praise and acclaim amongleaders, professors and students both at home and abroad and lays good

foundation for our school to conduct further academic exchange andcooperation in the future.
