Introduction to MA/MTI Programs at CFL, SMU
Linguistics and Applied Linguistics
The college has enrolled graduate students since 1979 and it was authorized to grant master degree for “Translation Theories and Practice” (later uniformly renamed “Linguistics and Applied Linguistics”) in 1986, being one of the first two colleges in the country authorized to grant the master degree of that discipline (the other is Beijing Foreign Studies University).
In more than30 years of postgraduate education, the college has not only accumulated a wealth of experience in teaching but also a variety of research orientations, significant academic achievements, and a favorable and integrated echelon structure in this discipline, rendering the M.A. program reputed among those of its kind and other similar ones in China. The M.A. advisors in this program, mostly in their prime and full of vigor, have made many achievements in respective fields of research, and enjoyed a reputation among their domestic colleagues. Valuing the quality of cultivation, they teach conscientiously and are strict in thesis instruction. Since 1979, the program has cultivated a large number of masters, who mostly work in the government, enterprises and public institutions concerning shipping or foreign trade, and colleges and universities, where they are promoted to important positions with their abilities acknowledged.
English Language and Literature
We have three branches in English Language and Literature Program: Linguistics, British and American Literature, British and American Culture. Quite a few tutors in these programs have made many achievements in their respective fields of research, which have produced great social influences and gained acknowledgement of peer experts.
The programs provide a wide range of courses, including Academic Thesis Writing, General Linguistics, Semantics, Pragmatics, Cognitive Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Contrastive Studies and Translation between English and Chinese, Stylistics, Western Literary Theories, History of British and American Literature, American Literature, British Literature, British and American Poetry, British and American Culture, Language and Culture, Language Policy, Research Methodology and so on. Apart from teaching and introducing the development and current situation of these research areas in Britain and America, as well as the major theoretical frameworks and research methodologies, these courses also try to integrate the research frameworks abroad with domestic ones to promote the construction and development of the Chinese Linguistics and Literature discipline and cultivate more advanced specialized talents for the government, entrepreneurs, educational institutions and other relevant organizations.
Japanese Language and Literature
This program started to enroll MA candidates in the year of 2013. Focus of this discipline lays on Japanese language and literature. Supervisors on this discipline have made considerable achievements in their respective research fields and exerted a positive social influence on the very academic circle. This program attaches much attention to, on one hand, laying solid foundation for graduate students in the very specialization, providing general courses of Introduction of Japanese Linguistics, Japanese Grammar, Research on Japanese Culture, on the other hand, to cultivating graduates specifically in the fields of Pragmatics, Cultural Linguistics and Contrastive Studies between Japanese and Chinese. Graduates in this program are supposed to pass the program courses as well as fulfilling their Master’s theses, in which process their theoretical foundation research qualification can be constructed. To cultivate graduates’ practical competence they will be organized to join field work such as tutoring practices, conference interpretation and international communication work of Shanghai City.
MTI
This program, originated from the program of “Translation Theories and Practices”, started to enroll MTI candidates in the year 2011. This program focuses on training students’ abilities in practical translation and interpretation. Supervisors in this program have made considerable achievements in their respective research fields and exerted a positive social influence on their academic circle. This program has three orientations: translation research and practices, shipping and business literature translation and contrastive studies and translation between English and Chinese. The cultivation is principled by “practice advantaged, theory qualified”, thus students will be organized to join a lot of field work such as translation and interpretation projects (in collaborate with ventures and corporations), conference interpretation and international communication work of Shanghai City.
