Western ideas about contrastive linguistics canbe traced back to the first half of the 19th century, represented by German language philosopherHumboldt (Humboldt), while as a discipline, the contrastive linguistics is taken shape in the 20thcentury. In Europe, contrastivelinguistics is originated from the famous Danish linguistYe Sibai (Jespersen), and in the UnitedStates , from the famous human linguists wolff (Whorf). Many scholars regard thepublication of Cross-Cultural Linguistics (Lado, 1957) by American linguist Lado as a sign of the birth of contrastive linguistics. InChina, since the speech, Through the Contrastive Study of Grammar, given by Mr Lv Shuxiang in Beijing Language Institute in 1977, contrastivelinguistics research in China has developed rapidly and achieved fruitful results including highquality monographs, academic papers, collected papers, etc. Besides, the level of research involves the micro, meso and macro with various perspectives, and all of these can offer significant guidancefor the contrastiveresearch and applied research. However, when seen from the present development of the western linguistics as a whole, the contrastive study of China faces severe challenges, with its relative backwardness in thefollowing five aspects: the theoretical basis, research methods, crosslanguage corpus verification, description and sublimation of theory, and application and promotion of the results. Therefore, there is a great need for Chinesecontrastive study researchers to digest the latest research achievements of western linguistics, combine closely with the Chinese, and conduct tremendous innovative research in contrastivestudy at all levels. Innovative exploration can start from the current challenges, and base on such cutting edge linguistics theory as typological linguistics, cognitive linguistics and so on; adopt research methods by combining qualitative andquantitative; carry out alarge-scale cross-language verification on the basis of corpus (BNC, CCL); attach equal importance to the descriptionlanguage facts and sublimation of theory; extend the application and promotion of theresults of contrastivestudy, etc. Finally, taking "the cognitive contrastresearch in English and Chinese existential sentence" as a supportive case studies, the detailed discussion got some different, interesting, and revealed discoveries under the research paradigm of cognitive linguistics, and cross-language verification on the basis of corpus.
