In order to help the 22nd grade graduate students clarify the direction of their professional study and career development efforts, further consolidate the foundation of foreign language majors and accurately grasp the value of the discipline, the College of Foreign Languages invited Wang Dawei, former professor and dean of Shanghai Maritime University, to give a lecture on postgraduate study guidance in the lecture hall of Foreign Language Building at 10:00 a.m. on May 11. The lecture was hosted by Dean Zhang Yan, and all the first-year students attended.
Before the lecture started, Dean Zhang introduced Professor Wang's profound knowledge and rigorous academic attitude to all students, and the lecture started with a warm applause from students. Professor Wang firstly shared his learning experience as an old senior, and humorously introduced his growth history in Shanghai Maritime College (the predecessor of Shanghai Maritime University). Secondly, Professor Wang gave a multi-dimensional lecture on how to improve translation and retrieval ability, language ability, English writing and Chinese to English translation ability with examples. On the level of translation retrieval ability, Prof. Wang said that the practice of translation requires a lot of checking of terms and parallel texts of the original text, and searching skills are crucial in the process of checking; on the level of language ability, Prof. Wang pointed out that English to Chinese translation should focus on input and understanding, while Chinese to English translation should focus on output and expression; on the level of English writing ability, Prof. Wang emphasized that it is necessary to avoid rigidity in English, pay attention to the accumulation of word collocation, and cultivate the ability of natural output. In terms of English writing skills, Professor Wang emphasized the importance of avoiding English rigidity, focusing on the accumulation of word combinations, and developing the ability to produce output naturally. Finally, Professor Wang recommended some professional learning materials, such as English for shipping, translation skills essay, Translation Search Guide, etc., and encouraged the students to strengthen their professional knowledge and mobilize their reserve knowledge flexibly.
