Foreign Language Subjects and Majors Serving National Strategy: College of Foreign Languages Successfully Held a Discipline and Major Validation Meeting

On April 22, 2023, Serving National Strategies: Expert Validation Meeting on the Development Plan of Foreign Languages and Literature and Translation Disciplines of Shanghai Maritime University was held in Haifeng International Lecture Hall of Lin-gang Campus, with He Li, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Maritime University, attending and delivering a speech.

Prof. Chai Minglai, member of the National Steering Committee of Postgraduate Education of Translation Degree of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and chairman of the Steering Committee of Postgraduate Education of Translation Degree of Shanghai Municipality, Prof. Yang Lianrui, member of the National Steering Committee of Postgraduate Education of Translation Degree of China and dean of College of Foreign Languages of Ocean University of China, Prof. Zhou Guijun, member of the National Steering Committee of Postgraduate Education of Translation Degree of China and dean of College of Foreign Languages of Northeast Normal University, and Prof. Zhang Zhaoyuan, member of the National Steering Committee of Postgraduate Education of Translation Degree of China, Prof. Zhu Yifan of Shanghai Jiaotong University, member of the National Teaching Guideline Committee for Postgraduate Degree in Translation, Prof. Tao Youlan of College of Foreign Languages of Fudan University, member of the National Teaching Guideline Committee for Postgraduate Degree in Translation, and other experts from outside the university visited the site to give guidance, and Yang Bin, Dean of Graduate School of Shanghai Maritime University, Zhang Yan, Dean of College of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Maritime University and other team members and all professors were present.

The experts firstly gave guidance on the overall discipline planning and development path of the College of Foreign Languages, and then gave specific opinions on the revision of the four training programs of the second-level doctoral program Maritime Languages and Applications, the first-level master's program Foreign Languages and Literature and the master's degree in translation (full-time and part-time). He pointed out that in the midst of the unprecedented changes in the past hundred years, it is necessary to rethink the connotation of foreign language talents training according to the current situation of the times, the country and the industry, to cultivate complex talents for the future, to do something and not to do something, to enter the mainstream of foreign language disciplines and specialties, and to dig maritime characteristics, in order to do a good job in the development of the discipline and to make a breakthrough in the declaration of the doctoral program in translation.

Experts in the field of foreign language and literature and translation, as well as leaders of the university and functional departments were invited to this meeting to discuss the path of innovative development and implementation plan of the College of Foreign Languages and Literature, which will help the university to realize the 14th Five-Year Plan to build a world class maritime university with global influence in the field of foreign language and literature and translation talent training and discipline construction. The seminar laid a solid foundation for the university to achieve its goal of becoming a world-class maritime university with global influence.
