Lecture Introduction:
For more than two thousand years, people have only seen the aspect of translation, regardless of the East and the West, and accordingly, the study of translation has only focused on this aspect, specifically on the question of how to translate from the original text to the translated text, or in a word, the question of how to translate. The introduction of translation studies has brought to light the other side of translation, that is, there are many factors behind the conversion of the two languages that govern the translator's translation behavior. Accordingly, the study of translation is not only limited to the textual conversion of two languages but also focuses on and explores the factors that govern translation behavior and translation activities. In this way, translation theory allows us to see the more substantive side of translation through the surface of translation, and thus presents a broader academic research prospect for the current translation research.

Professor Xie Tianzhen has served as the Vice President and Executive Vice President of the Institute of Social Sciences of Shanghai International Studies University and is currently the Director of the Institute of Translation Studies of the School of Advanced Translation Studies of Shanghai International Studies University. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Chinese Comparative Literature. He is also the editor-in-chief of the quarterly journal Chinese Comparative Literature, the executive editor of the bimonthly journal Oriental Translation, and the editorial board member or academic committee director of the major translation journals in China Translation, Translation Quarterly (Hong Kong), Journal of Translation (Hong Kong), and Wide Translation (Taiwan), a member of the Academic Committee of the National Teaching Steering Committee of Master of Translation (MTI) of the Ministry of Education, and an academic advisor of the Chinese Comparative Literature Society and the Translation Research Society. He is also a member of the Academic Committee of the National Teaching Guidance Committee of Master of Translation (MTI) of the Ministry of Education, a member of the Translation Committee of the International Association of Comparative Literature, and an honorary chairman of the Translation Research Society of the Chinese Society of Comparative Literature. He has also been appointed as a part-time professor or visiting professor in more than ten famous universities in China, including Peking University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Sichuan University. Since 1986, he has been a senior visiting scholar at the Department of English and the Department of Translation of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Department of English of Baptist University, the Department of Comparative Literature of Alberta University in Canada, and the School of Asian and African Studies of Moscow University in Russia, and has been invited to attend international academic conferences in the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, South Africa, Brazil, Russia, Australia, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and has delivered more than ten keynote speeches.
